Fished down south today, in the Indian River. Wasn’t going to go but decided around 2 or so in the afternoon that the wind forecast was a little off (by about 20mph) so I headed out to do a little wade fishing. I tried a bunch of casts for tarpon boiling in the canal but didn’t get any nods or takers. Once out in the river I saw a lot of bait fish milling around and also a bunch of raining bait that I guessed to be the work of jacks. For the longest time I didn’t see a game fish one, then basically walked on top of a small red laid up in the grass. It didn’t really spook but glided off.

The water was too cloudy to cast to anything but boils, pushes and pods of bait.
I paddled up into a head-water today, about a three mile round trip. A lot of bait in all shapes and sizes milling around with random predators blowing up from below. I hopped out a few times in likely looking run-outs but didn’t get much for my efforts aside from some smaller trout to 2lbs. The water was too cloudy to cast to anything but boils, pushes and pods of bait. I did find a new tarpon spot that I think will be much better when the wind isn’t blowing 15-20mph. Once I did make it to likely looking water it was pretty much time to head back. I only had time to land one snook and have one nice tarpon bounce off the hatch of my kayak before coming unbuttoned but overall a good day at the beach.
Today my friend Ron and I went out in search of some redfish to catch on the flats. Read the rest of this entry »
